A Little History...

Thomas Kusian’s Grandfather, pictured on right, at the Rialto Market, c. 1920

Thomas Kusian, CEO of Tucson Food Service, has groceries and produce in his blood. Literally.

In 1920, his grandfather started selling groceries at the Rialto Market on Congress Street (next to the Rialto Theatre), serving up sacks of flour and lard to ranchers and homesteaders.

Three generations later, Tom and his partners own and operate the 17th Street Market, 17th Street Music Shop, 17th Street Catering, and Tucson Party Rentals.

Tom pioneered the open-air Farmer’s Market in Tucson, back in ’92, when a Willcox farmer came to Tom, looking for a spot to sell his Rainier variety cherries. Tom opened his docks to the farmer and started selling 3-lb. bags of cherries for $1.

Within weeks, the concept of Tom’s Downtown Farmers Market took hold, and when more and more farmers came and offered up their produce, Tom decided to keep the market going.

In 1993 Tucson Food Services officially opened The 17th Street Market. Today it is a popular shopping destination for thousands of Tucsonans.
